Pavona

The genus Pavona , with at least 15 valid species, occurs throughout the tropical and partly subtropical Indo-Pacific – from the Red Sea to the west coast of America, from South Africa to Japan. Several species grow in an interlaced leaf shape, others have a columnar, massive or submassive growth form. The genus is characterised by the fact that the corallites have no walls, so the inner septae and outer costae are fused together to form ‘septocostae’.

Pavona cactus and Pavona decussata are the most common Pavona corals in marine aquariums. They are very adaptable corals that can cope with a wide range of water parameters and temperatures, survive several hours out of the water and tolerate surprisingly high nitrate and phosphate levels for stony corals. They thrive in all light intensities and spectra, even in shaded areas on the bottom with little diffuse light. They just grow a little slower…
The perfect coral for beginners. Their growth rate is moderate to rapid, so a small offshoot can grow into a stately mother stock in a few years.

Pavona cactus `beige´

The cactus coral is one of the most common corals in marine aquaria. It is robust in the face of increased nutrient concentrations and fluctuating water parameters, and simply adapts its growth form and rate to the available light conditions. With its leaf-like, nested coral skeleton, it provides a habitat for many small creatures.

Pavona decussata `brown´

This coral is undoubtedly one of the most robust stony corals. It thrives in fluctuating water parameters, in high nitrate and phosphate levels, grows even in partial shade (although a little slower) and can survive being left dry for several hours if necessary. The perfect coral for beginners. Although not “colourful”, it is truly “chocolate brown” like no other coral.
Incidentally, very few corals in coral reefs are brightly coloured, they tend to be more pastel.Pavona decussata `green´

Pavona decussata `green´

In addition to the chocolate brown variety, we also have a green variety. The green variety needs more light and is a little more sensitive than the virtually indestructible brown variety. It can extend ‘fighting tentacles’ (mesenteric filaments) to get rid of unwelcome neighbours. This means keeping a safe distance of at least 5 cm from other corals.
TIP: As both colour forms belong to the same species, they will not nettle with each other. They can therefore be planted together to create a beautiful green and chocolate brown colour combination!
