Montipora

Montipora is a very diverse genus with growth forms ranging from crustose to foliose and submassive to branch-like. The very small polyps and the interstitial tissue can have the most different colors and also be differently colored. They are very resilient corals, most species are really robust and pretty fast growing.

Montipora sp. `digitat, rot´

This red Monti is an easy and attractive species that should not be missing in any reef tank. It is also fine with lower light intensities. Due to its fast growth it should not be placed in the central reef construction, becuase it would overgrow any other corals soon. Caution: Very fragile!

Montipora danae `knallgrün´

A beautiful Montipora that grows in thick slabs. Our colour form is bright green and extremely fluorescent and we have been growing it since 2010. It occurs from the Red Sea to the central Pacific. This means that they require relatively high light levels in the aquarium, and moderate currents are beneficial. As a mother colony it is a real eye-catcher and provides a shady area for nocturnal and cave dwelling animals.

Montipora danae was scientifically described in 1851 by the French zoologist Henri Milne Edwards and named after the famous geologist, mineralogist, volcanologist and coral taxonomist James Dwight Dana.

They are characterised by warty bumps on the calcareous skeleton, called verrucae. These can be fused together, especially at the edges. These „ornaments“ give the skeleton a „mountainous“ appearance, with deep valleys that house the very small polyps. Other Montipora species with a very similar skeletal structure and growth form are M. verrucosa, M. verruculosa and M. palawanensis.

Montipora sp. `rainbow´

A dream of coral – orange corallites in purple intermediate tissue. Incrusting growth form. Very similar to the so-called Montipora „superman“, which are most likely different colour types of one species.

Montipora confusa `neongreen´

Montipora confusa is a robust but attractive and rather fast growing beginner’s species. It has neon green interstitial tissue and brown – for Montipora quite large – „fuzzy“ polyps. It is very fluorescent in the evening blue light. Its natural range is the Coral Triangle as far as Fiji. It is found in lagoons and shallow reefs. It is not common.

Montipora confusa initially grows in a crusty form to cover as much of the substrate as possible. The growth then becomes increasingly irregular, with columnar branches pointing upward. A characteristic feature is the flame-like pattern of the skeletal ornaments on the edges and at the tips of the branches, as well as the light-coloured ridges between which the polyps are embedded.

Other Montipora species with a similar skeletal structure and growth form are Montipora vietnamensis, M. cebuensis and M. undata.
