Aufgrund der Größe der Polypen unterscheidet man bei den Steinkorallen in LPS (large polyped stony oder großpolypige Steinkoralle) und SPS (small polyped stony oder kleinpolypige Steinkoralle).
Oft wird pauschal angenommen, LPS Korallen seien „robuster“ als SPS Korallen.
Aber es gibt sowohl empfindliche LPS Arten, als auch sehr pflegeleichte SPS Korallen, die wenig Ansprüche an Licht, Strömung oder Nährstoffkonzentrationen stellen.
Im Allgemeinen gedeihen LPS-Korallen unter etwas nährstoffreicheren Bedingungen und decken einen größeren Anteil ihres Energiebedarfs durch den Fang von Plankton.
