Why „Green Corals“?

….because our coral frags are grown with 100% green electricity!

We try to run our facility in the most energy efficient and resource saving way possible, including the following measures.

Renewable energy:

  • Our corals have been grown with 100% green electricity from “Naturstrom AG” since our company was founded in 2008 (and even before)* Two PV systems (commissioned in 2012 and 2021) with a capacity of 16.6 kWp produce most of the electricity needed to run our facility.*
  • Heating has been provided by a heat pump since 2012.
  • We do not have a combustion engine vehicle; we are fully electrically mobile for our customers with our microcar or, in the immediate vicinity, by bicycle.
  • We do not use coal, oil, gas or nuclear energy. Not for a long time…
  •

Energy and resource efficiency:

  • Use of energy efficient technology, e.g. T5 and LED lighting and low flow pumps.
  • Utilisation of waste heat from the aquarium system for heating of the living area.Nutzung der Abwärme der Aquarienanlage zur Wohnraumbeheizung.
  • We always try to minimise technology usage and consumption of additives, salt etc. as much as possible.

Recycling:

  • Nutrient recycling in the algae tank and feeding the algae to the fish. Also plant, fruit and vegetable waste from the kitchen and garden (e.g. kohlrabi leaves, dandelion, fruit…).
  • Recycling of coral rubble and dead coral skeletons in the lime reactor.
  • Double use of A-circuit water during water changes.
  • Composting of extracted sludge, spent activated carbon, PO4 adsorber.

Sustainability:

  • We only sell aquarium-grown ” corals. For SPS or LPS corals, soft corals and anemones, we have developed specific fragmentation techniques to replace the natural removal of corals.
In this way we have sold many thousands of cultured corals to other marine aquarists and aquarium retailers.
  • We support the cultivation and breeding efforts of other dedicated breeders and, in general, companies that embrace sustainability.
  • Fish breeding has also come a long way in recent years and many species can now be successfully bred.
This should be consistently supported by the qualified marine aquarium trade!

Ökologie:

  • A marine aquarium gives us the opportunity to experience the fascination of the oceans in our homes, around the clock.
  • Almost all the tribes of the animal kingdom can be found in the sea. Corals, octopuses, sea urchins, starfish and many other forms of life can only be found here.
  • 13 out of 27 phyla and 43 out of 79 classes are found only in the sea. Life originated in the sea!
  • Every day we learn more about the life and behaviour of different species and their many interactions with each other and their environment. Everything is connected and influences everything else. There is always something new to discover!
  • A marine aquarium allows us to learn more about the ecological connections and interdependencies and to understand the subtle rules of our planet’s ecosystems!
  • We will only protect what we value and understand! Our aquarium teaches and inspires us about nature. It creates awareness and empathy for the delicate interrelationships in nature. This is the basis for active environmental protection and committed conservationists!
  • Children are interested in everything and want to learn. Let’s give them guidance and support to understand nature instead of numbing them with TV and computer games!
  • Everyone should learn about the needs of different species. – And then try to get as close as possible to those requirements and constantly work on optimising the care conditions. If the fish mate in the evening, that is a good sign that they are doing well!
  • Unimaginable 30 years ago, the successful care and reproduction of corals and many invertebrates and fish is now commonplace. But there’s still a lot to do… let’s get on with it.

But the full diversity can only be experienced in the ocean!

If you want to go diving, register for one of our marine biology workshops!

* In the years 2013-2015, the PV system covered 71.9% of our aquarium’s electricity needs on an annual average. In the months of March to October, it was even 100%. The rest of our energy needs were covered by the independent green electricity provider NATURSTROM AG, which sells green electricity exclusively from renewable sources (sun, wind, water, geothermal energy, bioenergy) and is committed to a decentralised energy transition.
UPDATE: In 2021, another PV system was added and in 2022, a battery storage system was installed. New performance data to follow…
